DARA MABREY
"Hello everybody, my name is Dara Mabrey and I am a senior at the University of Notre Dame and a member of the Women’s Basketball team. As a female athlete competing at the highest level I have faced many obstacles that tested my mental health. However, through the midst of it all, I try to remain mentally healthy because I practice for a healthy mindset just like I practice with a basketball on a court. Yes, sometimes this means Netflix, Ben & Jerry’s and a face mask. In my opinion it’s way more than that. I don’t have goals to be temporarily happy. I have goals to always remain at peace with myself, my body, and my mental. My faith has a lot to do with this because I give all my problems to God. I understand that he is in control and I am not. Praying and talking with God has brought me peace and a true understanding. He believes in me because I believe in him and what path he is creating for me. I understand everybody and their spirituality is different. Personally, my mental health is where it is today because of my faith. Walking, praying, and meditating are all ways that have improved my mental health as a female student-athlete. One of the things that truly brings me peace is going for a mile walk, stopping at a bench and recognizing all the blessings put in front of me. When I am at my best mentally, I perform my best in the classroom, on the court, in the community and in all other aspects of my life. It is very important to take care of yourself FIRST and FOREMOST!! I hope I can inspire the upcoming generations of athletes to practice self-care and having a healthy mindset..."
